U.S. Figure Skating’s Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship Returning to Wichita in 2027
Wichita, Kan. (March 25, 2026) – U.S. Figure Skating has selected Wichita, Kansas, as the host city for the 2027 Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship, bringing one of the sport’s premier qualifying competitions back to the city. The event will be hosted locally by Visit Wichita in partnership with the Wichita Figure Skating Club, reinforcing the city’s status as the Best Sports-Event Host City.
“Wichita continues to be a fantastic partner of U.S. Figure Skating, and we are excited to award the Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships to Wichita once again,” said Bob Dunlop, senior director of events at U.S. Figure Skating. “The city’s facilities, combined with the local expertise led by Visit Wichita and the Wichita Figure Skating Club, has proven to be an outstanding destination for our athletes, coaches and fans.”
The competition is expected to bring more than 1,800 athletes, along with coaches, officials, families and fans, to Wichita. In total, the championship is projected to generate an estimated $1.7 million-plus in local economic impact for the Wichita community through hotel stays, dining, transportation and local attractions.
Visit Wichita has a strong history of hosting U.S. Figure Skating events, previously hosting the U.S. Skating Championships in 2025, the Midwestern Synchronized Sectional Championship in 2024 – as well as the Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships in 2018 and 2020 – and the National Theatre on Ice competition in 2022.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to once again welcome the synchronized skating community back to Wichita,” said Josh Howell, vice president of sports development at Visit Wichita. “Hosting this event again speaks to the strength of our partnership with U.S. Figure Skating, the quality of our facilities like INTRUST Bank Arena and the Wichita Ice Center, and the dedication of the Wichita Figure Skating Club. Events like this bring thousands of athletes and visitors to Wichita and create meaningful economic impact for our community.”
The competition is scheduled for Jan. 20–23, 2027, with events and official practices taking place at INTRUST Bank Arena and unofficial practices hosted at the Wichita Ice Center. “We are thrilled that U.S. Figure Skating has selected Wichita to host this prestigious event once again,” said AJ Boleski, regional general manager at INTRUST Bank Arena. “Being chosen to host again speaks to the outstanding hospitality of our community and the top-notch experience our team and partners work hard to deliver for athletes, coaches and fans.”
“It is an honor to welcome back the talented synchronized skating community to our facility,” said Sean O’Reilly, general manager of the Wichita Ice Center. “An event like this is a great reminder of how important ice sports are to our city and our community. We are seeing so many more people become interested in learning how to skate following the Olympics, and we hope that even more are inspired by the amazing skating they’ll see at this competition.”
Visit Wichita and the Wichita Figure Skating Club, alongside community volunteers, will provide local support for the event.
“We are so very honored to be awarded the 2027 Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship and to have the opportunity to welcome such talented athletes to our city once again. Hosting U.S. Figure Skating events alongside Visit Wichita always brings pride and renewed inspiration to our club members,” said Jeannel McCart, president of the Wichita Figure Skating Club.
Synchronized skating features teams of up to 20 skaters performing choreographed routines set to music, often combining intricate formations, speed and precision in performances lasting less than five minutes. Teams compete in multiple divisions ranging from youth to adult levels.
The Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship is part of the pathway to the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships, where top teams from each sectional competition advance to compete for national titles.
